OPPORTUNITIES Service to the Lord "...truly I tell you. Just as you did it to one of the least of these, who are members of your family" Matthew 25:40 Service to the Lord and to the community is an expectation of all the members of Milwaukie Lutheran Church. The opportunities to serve MLC and the Milwaukie community are as varies as the personalities and talents of our congregation. MLC encourages all members to become involved so as to grow in faith and fellowship. Possibilities for service include: Volunteers; Outreach; Fellowship; and Education.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDE: Assisting Ministers - Four assistants are needed each service to support the Sunday morning service and help serve Communion. Eucharistic Ministers - Trained laypersons provide Communion to shut-ins and elderly member of MLC. This service is as much a blessing to those who serve as those who receive. Music Ministers - Choirs and instrumental groups support the congregation each Sunday morning at both services. See opportunities provided on the Music Ministry Link Building Maintenance and Repair - Every building has its ups and downs, and fixing what ails the church buildings is an ongoing project. Anyone handy with a hammer will always be in demand. Landscaping - Seasonal yard clean-ups are conducted by the facilities committee. Additional support is required for lawn mowing and care of garden beds. Audio/Visual/Computer Skills - Maintaining the sound system, and helping to debug computers and printers are all necessary functions that help the church run smoothly. Small Groups - MLC has several small groups that each function in three ways--as Bible study, as a vehicle for friendship and spiritual support. The Small Groups Leader guides the groups so that it maintains a balance among these functions. Greeters and Ushers - Each service, greeters welcome worshippers into the building, with a warm smile and a friendly 'hello'. Ushers provide bulletins and assistance throughout the service. Acolytes - Two youth are needed for each service to light candles and support the Sunday service. Readers - The Old Testament, New Testament and Psalm are read by a member of the congregation each Sunday morning. Reading skills and pulpit height requirements are all that is required. Sunday School - Teaching children is a special calling at MLC. Sunday School teachers, substitute teachers, and assistants are always needed for youth, preschool through high school age. Vacation Bible School - Each summer, MLC conducts a week long program for children. (preschool through 6th grade.) Parish Nurse Support - Volunteers support the Parish Nurse and the Health Ministry Team by providing transportation to appointments, light cleaning, meals, errand running, reading, and other miscellaneous tasks. Funeral Luncheons - Funeral coordinators are always looking for volunteer helpers. Usually the lead time for funeral means is 2-3 days. Often the need for food varies from a full lunch or cookies, cake and coffee. Special Events - Events come up during the course of the year usually requiring food preparations, table decorations, setup, serving and clean-up. Group leaders work with volunteers to meet the needs of various events. Women's Circles - Five 'Circles', groups of women, meet monthly at various times of the day, and days of the week for Bible study and fellowship. They also carry out a variety of functions for the church including hosting events, sponsoring and organizing fund raisers. Food and Clothing Collections- Included in this list are the following: House of Zion - Clothing is collected all year for the low income (migrant workers) served by the House of Zion. At Christmas food and toys are collected for the annual House of Zion Christmas Party. Annie Ross House - Clothing, food, toys, household supplies are collected during the year to support the Annie Ross House women's shelter in Milwaukie. Love INC - Love In the Name of Christ, helps families in Clackamas County that are in need. It is a cooperative effort by a group churches and service agencies to more affectively help the disadvantaged. Coordinator for Milwaukie Lutheran is Lisaana Morley. Please contact her for more information at 503-513-0237. Piecemakers -- Quilting - MLC is blessed with skilled seamstresses. These nimble fingered members get together on the third Friday of the month to sew and tie quilts for Dorenbecker Children's Hospital, Providence Milwaukie Hospital and they also make beautiful baby quilts for each child baptized at MLC. Lutheran World Relief Support - Members of the congregation routinely donate items to various mission kits for Lutheran World Relief including layettes, school kits and health kits. These items are assembler, inventoried and shipping to LWR. Church Library - Consistently updating the library's collection is no small task. The library routinely has new books for the use of the congregation. Altar and Communion Support - Seldom seen and, perhaps, taken for granted, are the folks that maintain the alter. Cleaning silver, fresh flowers, candles, and the appropriate altar cloths don't appear by magic. MLC celebrates Holy Communion every Sunday. These same volunteers provide Communion set-up and clean-up. Bread and wine are a needed weekly donation. Bi-Annual Fall Festival - A dedicated group of crafters meet for fellowship and craft projects as the Fall Festival approaches. These craft projects are sold at the bi-annual Fall Festival. A small army of volunteers are required to support the Saturday, Fall Festival sale. Prayer Shawl Ministry - Knitters are welcome to participate in the knitting of shawls or lap robes for shut-ins, and congregational members in need of prayer, warmth and love. Coffee Fellowship Hour - A coffee hour is help each Sunday Between services for socialization and fellowship. Volunteers are need to host the coffee hour, donate snacks and prepare coffee. Tellers and Counters - A group of volunteers makes sure that the collections and deposits for Sunday morning offerings are taken to the bank each week. Monday morning another group of volunteers gather to reconcile the offering collections. The collection information is then given to the recording secretary to keep the giving statements current. Security - The facilities committee is always looking for persons to help lock up the church and secure the alarm system. Each evening of the week a walk-thru is performed and church is secured. Night owls are needed.
